PNG to SVG: Make icons and logos editable paths

PNG is commonly used for transparent background icons, logos and graphic illustrations. The key to converting PNG to SVG is to trace the color blocks and edges in the pixels into paths for easy scaling and editing. Here we introduce how to check transparent areas, what original image is more suitable, and the cleaning steps after conversion.

Select the original PNG image suitable for vectorization

Give priority to directly exported PNGs instead of compressed screenshots from chat software. Icons and flat signs with clear body edges and clear color gradations often make it easier to check the traced path.

The transparency channel does not automatically make low-resolution images clearer. If the original image has blurred edges, missing lines, or text that is too small, details may still be altered during conversion. Enlarge the preview of the original image and first confirm whether the material is clear enough.

  • Keep the main body and margins intact and avoid cropping the edges of the graphic.
  • Check that the light-colored graphics just blend in with the white background.
  • Maximum upload size is 10 MB; processing is scaled proportionally to the 3 Mi pixel budget and the longest side 4096 pixel limit.

When converting transparent PNG to SVG, how should the background be processed?

PNG can have a transparent channel, but a transparent background and a white background are two different things. After conversion, first switch between transparent, white and black previews in the editor, and check whether there are still background color blocks, light edges or small fragments around the graphics.

Switching the preview background only changes the viewing mode and does not delete the graphics. When you need to remove the background, you can select the background fill color and delete it; all areas using that color will be removed together, and white or black details in the subject may also be affected. Highlight to confirm before deleting and undo if necessary.

Complete the three steps to convert PNG to SVG online

Step 1: Log in and confirm that your membership is valid, click the upload button on this page or go to the image to vector studio and select the PNG file. Currently only one unfinished task is accepted at a time.

Step 2: Wait for the queue processing to complete, drag the comparison slider between the original image and SVG, and observe the rounded corners, thin lines, small characters and transparent edges.

Step 3: Download the original SVG, or open the editor to adjust the color and graphics and export. To preserve editing changes, you should use the editor's export function.

  • The text will become a graphic path and will not automatically revert to an editable font.
  • The edited content will not be saved automatically. Please export the file before leaving.

Check the color and small size details of the logo before downloading

SVG uses paths to describe graphics, but this does not mean that the original design draft is recovered. Similar colors, small white spaces, and partial lines in the logo should be magnified and checked to see if they are clear at the actual size planned to be used.

Before using for printing, engraving or printing, please ask the manufacturer to confirm the color, minimum line width and file format. SVG export itself does not include pre-press color correction, nor is it guaranteed to be compatible with all production software.

PNG to SVG FAQ

Is it possible to change the PNG file suffix to .svg?

No. Changing the file name will not convert pixels to paths; vectorize and verify that the output file contains actual graphics paths.

Can I still edit the color after converting a transparent PNG to SVG?

You can open the SVG editor in the conversion result to view graphics by color, delete graphics, or remove strokes. Transparent areas and background color blocks need to be judged through preview, and the preview background color should not be regarded as the actual background.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
