Image to DXF: PNG, JPG outline conversion and CAD size check

Written and maintained by:Sweet Tomato E-commerce Technology Co., Ltd. Updated

Upload PNG, JPG or WebP in the image to vector studio, and the DXF outline can be downloaded after the new task is completed on the member side. This file is the result of a raw conversion and does not contain subsequent modifications by the SVG editor. It is not a centerline tracing, automatic annotation, or a ready-to-process CAD drawing.

What pictures are suitable for converting to DXF outline?

Give priority to logos, decorative patterns and black and white line drawings with clear edges, clear contrast and complete main body. Complex photos, gradients, and scan noise may turn into a large number of tiny outlines. The material should be organized first before deciding whether to vectorize.

A thick line in the picture has edges on both sides. Contour tracing may result in a closed shape around this line; this is different from a center line that only goes along the middle. When used for laser marking, single-line drawing or tool path, first confirm with the manufacturer whether the outer contour, center line or filled area is required.

Operation steps for converting online pictures to DXF

This platform accepts PNG, JPG, and WebP up to 10 MB, scaled equally according to the 3 Mi pixel budget and the longest side 4096 pixel limit. Conversion requires logging in and having a valid membership; only one unfinished task is allowed for the same account at a time.

DXF is the original outline attachment for new tasks on the membership side. When the old task does not have DXF, you cannot obtain DXF by changing the SVG file suffix; first check whether the existing files are sufficient, and then convert again if necessary. The output capabilities of independent developer APIs are subject to the API documentation.

  1. Enter the studio to upload pictures, wait for the existing tasks to be completed, and do not submit again.
  2. Check the vector preview against the original image to confirm the body, text and cutouts.
  3. Select DXF in the result download menu and save it locally in time.
  4. Import the file into the target CAD or cutting software and check the units, size and outline.

Why are the dimensions wrong after importing CAD?

The DXF on this site expresses coordinates in millimeters, and the default conversion is 96 pixels corresponding to 25.4 mm. The pixels here are the image sizes actually involved in contour conversion; if the large image is scaled, the final physical size cannot be calculated directly using the original image pixels.

For example, when the width of the actual converted image is 960 pixels, the default converted width of the entire canvas is 254 mm; when there is white space, the width of the main outline will be smaller. This is not a measurement of the true size of the object, nor does it automatically recognize the ruler in the picture.

After importing, first confirm that the software uses millimeters, then measure a known distance and scale it proportionally according to the target physical size. Do not judge the processing size solely based on screen display size, file pixels or software default units.

Will the modifications after editing SVG be synchronized to DXF?

No. The DXF in the task menu comes from the original converted outline; deleting the background, erasing, changing color or removing graphics in the SVG editor of this site will not overwrite the DXF. The editor exports SVG, PDF or PNG, which is a different file than the original attachment of the task.

If you need to use the edited shape in a DXF workflow, save the edited SVG, convert it in a design or CAD software that explicitly supports the relevant import and export, and then check the target file. Color preview and filling effects cannot prove that the tool path meets the processing requirements.

How to check before using it for laser, engraving and CNC?

This site’s DXF uses straight lines, arcs, circles and ellipses to represent contours, and Bezier curves will be converted approximately. The configured geometric error limit is 0.02 mm; this is only a file geometry approximation parameter, not a guarantee of machine processing accuracy or finished product tolerances.

Contour conversion is not responsible for tool compensation, material parameters, machining sequences, power, speed or safety clearances. The import capabilities of different software are also different. It should be checked first in the target software, and then confirmed by the producer. If necessary, use a sample to verify.

  1. Measure the actual width and height, confirm the units and scaling.
  2. Check whether the contour to be closed is closed, and remove duplicate lines and useless debris.
  3. Zoom in to view the inner holes, sharp corners, thin bridges and the spacing between adjacent outlines of small characters.
  4. Distinguish the outer contour, inner hole and center line, and let the manufacturer set the processing parameters.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.

The above information is used to describe the file format. The upload restrictions, membership requirements, results saving and editing capabilities of this site are subject to the page description and actual functions.
