Convert black and white line drawing to SVG: How to retain thin lines and closed areas

Written and maintained by:Sweet Tomato E-commerce Technology Co., Ltd. Updated

For black and white line drawings, the gray background of the paper and scanning noise need to be cleaned first, while retaining the finest strokes. The black outline may form a closed color block after tracing, and may not necessarily be a single-line center path that can be directly used for tooling.

Determine the problem and applicable conditions first

Pencil gray lines, scanned shadows, and rough paper textures can all become extra shapes. Increasing contrast can help distinguish lines, but too strong a threshold can eat up thin lines or glue adjacent lines together. First decide the intensity of treatment according to the purpose.

Process and check in order

  1. Check the original image for line breaks, ghosting and paper grain.
  2. Use the copy to adjust the brightness and contrast, observing even the smallest strokes.
  3. After conversion, the contour surface and single line path are distinguished and submitted to the target software for verification according to the purpose.

Check the finished result

When a laser, plotter or embroidery is required, a black and white preview alone should not be considered production-ready. Check the number of duplicate lines, closures and actual paths, and decide if centerline reconstruction is required.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
