How to choose between SVG and PNG? Icons, photos and transparency materials
Choose SVG for flat icons that require scalable paths and continuous color changes; choose PNG when you require fixed pixels, photo hierarchy, or broad image-receiving compatibility. Transparency is not a unique capability of SVG.
Determine the problem and applicable conditions first
PNG can save the transparent channel, but it is still limited by pixels after enlargement. SVG can contain bitmaps, and complex drawings may be larger than PNG. When choosing, you should consider the content structure, target software and actual display size. It is not necessary to vectorize every material.
Process and check in order
- Confirm whether the receiving platform supports SVG uploading and rendering.
- Compare the actual size look and feel to the real file size.
- Keep the SVG master and export PNG separately according to specific channels.
Check the finished result
If the recipient only allows bitmaps, export a PNG of sufficient pixels as required. Do not submit the PNG with a different suffix, and do not mistakenly mark the re-rasterized material as an editable vector path.
SVG format basis and reference materials
SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
