Text and outline text in SVG: Why can’t you change the text directly?
SVG’s text object can retain text semantics, while pathized text consists of graphic outlines. Bitmap tracing usually results in outlines and cannot automatically restore the original font or turn the text in the image into inputable text.
Determine the problem and applicable conditions first
Missing fonts may change the layout of the text; converting the outline can fix the appearance, but lose the convenience of directly changing the fonts. The traced outline may also retain font errors caused by blurring of the original image, and requires word-for-word proofreading.
Process and check in order
- Determine whether the text in the file is text or a path.
- Get the correct text and authorized fonts when you need to modify the copy.
- Check the kerning, line breaks, baseline and inner holes after reformatting.
Check the finished result
The brand name, model number and number cannot be accepted just because they look similar. Keep the source draft and outline delivery draft of editable text, and mark the purpose respectively to avoid re-tracing the entire picture in order to change a word in the future.
SVG format basis and reference materials
SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
