SVG transparency and transparent background: two concepts that are easily confused

Written and maintained by:Sweet Tomato E-commerce Technology Co., Ltd. Updated

Transparent background means there is no opaque basemap outside the subject; object transparency controls whether the subject itself is translucent. The pattern can reveal the background color, which may be due to the translucence of the object or missing graphics, which need to be judged separately.

Determine the problem and applicable conditions first

SVG can set transparency at the object, group, and fill levels. The color of multiple translucent objects overlapping is not always the same as merging them and reducing the transparency uniformly; you should pay attention to the overlapping area when converting or importing.

Process and check in order

  1. Compare the interior and edges of the subject on a white background versus a dark background.
  2. Check the opacity and fill-opacity of the object and parent group.
  3. If the production does not accept the translucency effect, please confirm the alternative with the producer first.

Check the finished result

Changes in transparency will change the actual color seen. The same color value cannot be regarded as the same color. When delivering a solid color pattern, complete color confirmation by background and process rather than simply removing all light areas.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
