SVG is very slow to open or edit: first look at the graphics complexity and device resources

Written and maintained by:Sweet Tomato E-commerce Technology Co., Ltd. Updated

Complex SVGs may contain a large number of paths, filters, and embedded images, which can take time for the browser to load and edit. Save existing works first, close irrelevant pages, reduce useless content on the copy, and do not open multiple large files repeatedly.

Determine the problem and applicable conditions first

When the original image is a photo or dense texture, converting it to a path may be more difficult to edit than a bitmap. It's worth checking the file size and number of objects; very small files may still contain expensive rendering effects. Device memory also affects the experience.

Process and check in order

  1. Confirm that the file can be opened normally in the browser or other software.
  2. Record file size, number of graphics and the slowest specific operation.
  3. Clean up useless objects and transfer complex node processing to suitable desktop software.

Check the finished result

Do not directly delete unknown groups or styles for speed, as that may destroy the pattern. If it is only used for web photography display, it may be more appropriate to retain the compressed bitmap; after optimization, both appearance and editability should be checked.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
