Material preparation

Are photos suitable for converting to vector? First, decide whether you need contour or texture.

Photos can be traced into path color blocks, but may change lighting, skin, and texture. Bitmaps are usually retained when a realistic photographic look is required, and pathing is considered only when a silhouette or flat poster effect is required.

Determine the problem and applicable conditions first

Hair, foliage, reflections, and shallow depth of field contain continuous changes, and the conversion results may have a lot of fragmentation. Converting the entire photo to SVG does not guarantee a smaller size, nor does it mean that the person and object layers can be separated like the original design.

Process and check in order

  1. Write clearly whether it will be used as a silhouette, icon, flat illustration or photo display.
  2. When only the main body is needed, process the background first to reduce irrelevant textures.
  3. Check the face, detail and color block separation at the target size after conversion.

Check the finished result

Don’t just look at the overall outline of the important people and products in the photo. If the image accuracy or material restoration does not meet the requirements, the bitmap should be retained or the manual illustration process should be used instead of reluctantly delivering it to get the SVG suffix.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
