What should you pay attention to before converting gradient patterns to vectors? Color Levels and Path Levels

Written and maintained by:Sweet Tomato E-commerce Technology Co., Ltd. Updated

A bitmap gradient may be traced as many adjacent patches of color, or may exhibit a different transition than the original image. If smooth gradients must be preserved, give priority to obtaining design source files with real gradient objects.

Determine the problem and applicable conditions first

Sunsets, halos, and soft shadows feature both color and transparency variations. Repeatedly compressing low-quality gradients can produce color banding, and conversion can further fix these stepped boundaries. Web page display purposes do not necessarily require path-based gradients.

Process and check in order

  1. Check whether there are obvious color bands in the original image.
  2. Confirm whether the goal is a smooth transition or an acceptable layered block style.
  3. Check borders on dark and light backgrounds and actual size after conversion.

Check the finished result

Don’t pretend to fix a gradient by removing a large number of approximate colors, as this may destroy the subject’s gradation. When accurate gradients are required, they should be reconstructed in the design software and checked to see if the target format and production process support it.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
