How to judge whether SVG is a real path or an embedded image

Written and maintained by:Sweet Tomato E-commerce Technology Co., Ltd. Updated

Select the object in an editing software that supports SVG and check whether the path nodes can be edited. SVGs containing image elements may still rely on bitmaps; simply changing the suffix or wrapping the PNG in SVG does not equal vectorization.

Determine the problem and applicable conditions first

Hybrid SVG can have paths, text, and bitmaps at the same time. For example, the icon outline is a path, but the shadow is an embedded photo. It is not enough to just check whether the word path appears. You should also confirm what objects the important subject consists of.

Process and check in order

  1. Try selecting and enlarging the subject outline in the editor.
  2. Check whether there are image objects, external link images and embedded bitmaps.
  3. Confirm whether mixed content is allowed according to the receiving requirements, and rearrange it if necessary.

Check the finished result

Do not directly delete the image element to force it to become a vector, as that may delete the entire subject. When a pure path is required for delivery, the pattern, small text, and background should be confirmed one by one, and the original file should be retained for review.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
