There are many small fragments in SVG: how to distinguish noise from details

First determine whether the fragments are valid textures in the original image or are residues from compression, scanning or cutout. Determine the retention range according to the target display size, and make a backup before cleaning to avoid deleting eyes, stamens or small font punctuation together.

Determine the problem and applicable conditions first

Small color differences in the background will be traced into scattered objects, and complex photos naturally contain a lot of details. Deleting by color may affect shapes of the same color spread throughout the image, not just the small fragment you are currently seeing. Object editing should be used when local processing is required.

Process and check in order

  1. Mark the suspected fragments on dark and light backgrounds.
  2. Compare the original image with the actual use to distinguish texture and noise.
  3. First try to delete a small number of useless objects, and then check the main body and blank space.

Check the finished result

The goal of the cleanup is to better fit the purpose, rather than simply reducing the number of shapes. The file becomes smaller but the details are still wrong; when the dense texture is not suitable for extensive manual cleaning, consider rearranging the original image.

SVG format basis and reference materials

SVG can contain both vector shapes, images, and text. Therefore, a file name ending in .svg does not alone prove that the original image has been converted to an editable path.W3C SVG 2 Specification: SVG Graphics Objectdescribes these object types.
